John James Grove (Late 1700's to [1832-1839?])
John James Grove m. Penelope Smith on 9th July 1811 in Lindridge, England.
Evidence confidence: Confident - LDS M022961 374928: Married at Lindridge, Worcester, England 9 Jul 1811
John and Penelope brought four of their children to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1832. Two more joined them in 1833. There is no mention of Edmund Grove in the ships' manifests. The reason for leaving England is unknown. John Grove was listed as a farmer by occupation on the ships passenger manifest:
Ship Name: John Wells
Departed: Liverpool
Arrived: Philadelphia 4 June 1832
Listed family members (erroneous 's' added to last name and ages seem a little off):
John Groves 45 male farmer
Penelope" 45 female
Anne " 18 "
Penelope" 15 "
Wm " 12 male
James " 10 "
Apparently, Elizabeth and Helen did not make the first trip and sailed on their own the following spring:
Ship Name: John Wells
Departed: Liverpool
Arrived: Philadelphia 19 March 1833
Listed family members:
Elizabeth Grove 20 female
Helen " 17 "
Evidence confidence: Confident despite age discrepencies and spelling GROVES. Will upload ship manifest images later.
John James Grove is buried 'at Trinity in Philadelphia' according to his wife's headstone, although the family has yet to locate his burial site. Evidence confidence: Unconfirmed: despite evidence on Penelope's headstone - no evidence of gravesite has been found at any Trinity Church in Philadelphia as yet.
Their children were born in England, possibly all christened in the parish of Weston Under Lizard, Staffordshire. Evidence confidence: Confident despite not having christening record for Elizabeth and addition of Edmund to the family list despite no further evidence of his connection to family. It is quite likely that he died young.
